Why Has The Law Been Changed?
The government has been looking to phase out the use of red diesel for a while now and finally set an end date. Red diesel gets its name because it has a red dye added to it, distinguishing it from other fuel types. It used to be that only agricultural and construction vehicles were able to use red diesel, but over time this changed, and anyone with a generator could purchase and use it.
The UK government has now taken action to stop the illegal use of red diesel; as they say, it is costing them millions in lost tax revenue each year. It was announced back in the 2020 Budget by Chancellor Rishi Sunak that it would remove Red diesel from the law by the 1st of April 2022; this has now happened.
The main reasoning behind this change in the law is to allow for proper taxation to be carried out on all forms of diesel, including any agricultural sectors that still qualify to use red diesel, as well as have a positive impact on climate change whilst benefitting the air quality.
Have You Already Purchased Red Diesel For Your Generator?
If you have already purchased red diesel for your generator, you can still use it until your stocks run out. After this point, you will no longer be able to purchase or use red diesel in your generator. Sales of any red diesel will be being monitored going forward. But we must take this chance to say, all TTS generators, whether they are hired JCB models or any other model.
At the time of publication of this article, your red diesel must have been used by the deadline, which has now passed. Any red diesel used after the 1st April 2022 will have a duty attached that needs paying. If the red diesel is already in the generator tank and was purchased before the 11th of June, 2021, you can finish that tank without paying any further fees.
Does White Diesel Work On A Generator?

So, the other side of the coin to this is that now, you may only use white diesel in your generator. So, what exactly is white diesel, and how does it differ from red diesel?
White diesel, also known as ‘road fuel’ or ‘on the road’ diesel, has a lower sulphur content than red diesel and therefore is less damaging to the environment. It can be used in any engine that isn’t being used for agricultural purposes or plant hire, including most generators.
